I didnโt make the title of this post โOvercoming Your Job Search Anxietyโ or โCoping With Your Job Search Anxietyโ because no article or one piece of advice can ever eliminate your job search anxiety or help you cope with it magically. And Iโve read many of those, way too many to count. The only thing that I know of that works is doing something about it, failing, learning a lesson or two from it, and then trying something new, wash, rinse and repeat.
In this post, I share one way that helped me get started on doing something about my job searching anxiety in hopes that it can be of value to you.

How do you experience job search anxiety? Examine the process of getting anxious during a job search. Replay the last time you experienced these feelings, and try to remember as many details as possible of that moment:
โค When did it start? What triggered it?
โค When did it get worse?
โค What thoughts preceded and/or accompanied it?

What are the roots of your job search anxiety? If itโs the first time youโre trying to tackle this anxiety, it might be very difficult to dig in deep enough to uncover the ultimate reasons lying behind it. This is very normal, donโt panic and give this question your best guess. Your answer will most likely change multiple times and evolve along the way as you learn new things about yourself and your job search anxiety.

It might be very very tempting to make big plans for overcoming your anxiety and attempt a few dozens of self-help techniques and mindset shifts that you really believe would work, but remember that this started with trying to do something about anxiety, overwhelming yourself is the last thing you want to do. Think about one or two things you can do that will feel effortless to you, youโre certain you will be able to remain consistent with and that will most likely have the biggest impact on helping relieve your job search anxiety, then focus all of your mental energy on doing it. Once that action becomes a habit running on auto-pilot mode, re-evaluate your situation and decide whatโs the next one or two effortless impactful actions you can take.
